(1944)
The sudden expiry of Mrs Doreen SA Lendich, at her home Awakino Point.
On Sunday night was responsible for the opening of an inquest yesterday morning by the district coroner, Mr. JA McLean. Mark Lendich husband of the deceased said that on Saturday morning his wife got up at about 7.30 am and carried out her domestic duties during the day. She did not complain of being unwell, but she had not been in the best of health since a baby girl had been born about two months ago.
She retired at 3 pm and at 9 pm; there was a knock at the door. His wife asked him to see who was there and almost immediately seemed to take a fit.
He rushed back to the bed and asked her what was wrong, but did not receive a reply. He picked her up but she never spoke. Her mother came into the bedroom and damped Doreen's face, but there was no response.
He then rang up Dr Marshall, who, on arrival, pronounced his wife to be dead. Mrs. D L Pirihi mother of deceased said she arrived at the house of her daughter about 9 pm on Saturday the back door was locked, but there was a light in the bedroom.
Witness was accompanied by her daughter Leone. The latter knocked at the door and Lendich opened it and said to witness go and see what is the matter with Doreen. Her daughter seemed to be in a deep sleep the witness tried to rouse her but without success.
She then obtained some water and dampens her daughters face and Doreen gasped and expired. Doreen had given birth to a baby girl on September the 5th 1944 and the confinement was quite normal. Doreen had never been ill or attended by a doctor. The inquest was adjourned.
