RESEARCH

Research and Development:

The Cardiology Department at the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne looks after children with heart rhythm problems and performs medical research. A major research topic is abnormal heart rhythms that can cause sudden unexpected death.

The eventual aim is to be able to develop simple non invasive tests to those at risk of developing these abnormal heart rhythms. These abnormal rhythms are usually due to very fast electrical impulses within the ventricles which are the muscular pumping chambers of the heart. These fast rhythms disrupt the normal pumping action causing a reduction in the amount of blood supplied to the body and potential death.

Dangerous abnormal heart rhythms can occur in apparently normal hearts, for example, in Long QT Syndrome where abnormal electrical recovery of the heart conduction can make sudden death more likely as well as in children with structural heart disease, including those who have had corrective heart surgery. Before these life threatening rhythms there may be early subtle changes in the electrical activity of the heart which can be detected on the exercise electrocardiogram (ECG).

Those interested in taking part in the study should contact

The researchers need financial contributions to help fund this unique and internationally significant project. Contributions can be made out to Dr Andrew Davis Research Fund.
